Yatihalaga Rjamaha Viharaya

The abandoned Yatihalagala Rajamaha Viharaya

The historic Yatihalagala Rajamaha Viharaya, which traces its origins back 700 years, was established in the year 1319 when a Brahmin named Vijithavelli planted a sacred Bodhi tree. This temple, which includes a 400-year-old shrine from Kandyan era, was the residence of the former Mahanayaka Thero of the Asgiriya Chapter, Most Venerable Palipane Chandananda Thero.

Yatihalagala Rajamaha Viharaya after development

In 2006, when Vaturakumbure Dhammarathana Nayaka Thero was appointed as the chief incumbent of this temple, the historic site was nearing abandonment. He then initiated its restoration. By constructing all essential temple components, including the Stupa, a grand Dhamma hall, the Sanghawasa, the temple courtyard, and spacious access roads, Vaturakumbure Dhammarathana Nayaka Thero successfully revitalized Yatihalagala Rajamaha Viharaya, transforming it into a renowned and active Buddhist temple recognized across the country.
