Ambulugala Danthapaya Rajamaha Viharaya

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service

Ambulugala Danthapaya Rajamaha Viharaya stands as a formidable spiritual landmark with a distinguished history of 700 years, originating from the Kotte period. This revered temple houses the Tamwita Dalada Mandir, which once sheltered the esteemed Vama Dalada Thero. Following its custodianship, which had been faltering, Venerable Wathurakumbure Dhammarathana Nayaka Thero took charge and spearheaded vital developments to ensure the preservation of this invaluable heritage for another millennium.

The Ambulugala Dalada Medura was on the brink of destruction due to a century and a half of neglect. However, under the decisive leadership of Nayaka Thero, it underwent a significant and necessary renovation that restored its historical significance. Moreover, ancient temples were constructed with impressive grandeur, including the Dhathu Mandiraya. In an impressively short timeframe, the temple complex was completed, incorporating the dharma hall, the monastery, the Bodhi Mandapa, the Malupetha, and extensive access roads.

Today, this temple actively drives the spiritual, social, cultural, and economic development of the local community, asserting its role in preserving and passing down a vital heritage to the nation.
