The Central Province, located within the Central Highlands, is elevated between 600 feet and 6,000 feet above sea level. It spans an area of 5,674 square kilometers, making up 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka. This province, consisting of three districts, is surrounded by mountain ranges, including Alagalla, Ambuluwawa, Bathalegala, Hunnasgiriya, and Mundagiriya. The Central Province is a region blessed with nature’s beauty, featuring picturesque rivers, waterfalls, and lakes.
In terms of religious significance, the Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of the most revered Buddhist sites, is located in Kandy, the capital of the Central Province. Kandy, historically known as Senkadagala, is also the place where one of the most significant events in Buddhist history took place-the Shyamosampadawa (ordination), initiated under the guidance of Ven. Weliwita Saranankara Thero. Additionally, the Malwathu and Asgiri temple are located here.
When examining the kingdoms of Sri Lanka, Kandy holds great historical significance as the last kingdom of the country. Known for its rich cultural heritage, Kandy has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage City.
Beyond Kandy, the Yatinuwara region is also deeply rooted in history. Many legendary tales of the Kandy era are associated with Yatinuwara, making it an equally important part of the region’s historical narrative.
